Lake Altus-Lugert is located in Southwest Oklahoma, near city of Lone Wolf, and is approximately 6,500 acres of open water: the park area covers 4,300 land acres. Fish species include largemouth bass, walleye, crappie, catfish, hybrid striped bass, and white bass. Fishing is available year-round. Several boat ramps and camping facilities are available. Quartz Mountain Resort Park features miniature golf and an 18-hole course.
Water-skiing, fishing and jet-skiing are popular summer sports. The adjacent Quartz Mountain Resort Park includes a challenging 18-hole golf course with pro-shop, water-slides and paddle-boats, plus hiking trails. It is a favorite spot for rock-climbers, photographers and bird-watchers. The north fork of the Red River runs through the park, and each year in the fall, hundreds of trout are released there for the annual “trout derby” in which participants fish for tagged, prize-winning trout.
Campsites, picnic grounds, grocery store, and numerous outdoor activities are within the park.
In contrast, the Altus-Lugert WMA gives visitors a chance to experience the birds, butterflies, and wildflowers of the area in a quieter, less populated environment. Rattlesnake Cove is an excellent place to look for diamondback rattlesnakes in the morning, before the heat of the day becomes too intense.
Blooming salt cedars in spring along the margins of the lake attract a host of butterflies. Green Herons, Red-bellied Woodpeckers, Wild Turkeys, Western Kingbirds, Eastern Kingbirds, Red-tailed Hawks, and mockingbirds abound.
