Oklahoma Trout Stocking Update

Extreme spring and summer weather conditions have prompted the Oklahoma Department of Wildlife Conservation to postpone regular trout stockings until water quality conditions improve. The area affected is the Lower Illinois River trout fishery located below Lake Tenkiller near Gore.

“Heavy spring rains and a period of extreme heating have combined to create unusually warm water in Tenkiller Reservoir,” said Jim Burroughs, east central region fisheries supervisor for the Wildlife Department. These waters are released through turbines used for hydropower generation and flow directly in to the Lower Illinois River trout stream.

“Water temperatures are approaching potentially lethal limits for trout. Regular stockings, as well as those temporarily postponed will begin as soon as conditions improve that will allow survival of the stocked trout,” Burroughs said.

According to biologists with the Wildlife Department, trout that were in the water before temperatures warmed to near lethal limits have a better chance of adapting to the temperatures and may find springs and other refuges where colder temperatures may exist.

Anglers are still having good success catching largemouth bass on topwater lures, and striped bass fishing is currently excellent on shad all along the river. Anglers are also catching channel catfish, walleye and saugeye.

The Lower Illinois River is one of the only two year-round trout fisheries in the state and is managed by the Wildlife Department. The other is the Lower Mountain Fork River in Beaver’s Bend State Park, below the Lake Broken Bow dam.

Tom Steed Bass Fishing Report

Oklahoma bass fishing report from Lake Tom Steed
Aspiring fishing pro Mike Diehl sends us this fishing report:

The bite at Lake Tom Steed is starting to pick up. Hybrids are hitting the surface chasing the new hatch of shad and the bass are coming out of the trees with a drop in the lake level. The cooler temperatures and rain have the bass coming from the depths as well, and although they are still a bit slow to strike, patience and persistence is paying off.

I boated 9 fish today between the rain storms and cloudy sky with these four being the nicest. Two of the bass were caught fishing shallow casting a buzz bait through the remaining twigs and stick ups while the other two came from the bank just off the bluffs and deeper water.

Editor’s Note: Thanks for the pics and report Mike. Looks like you had an absolutely great day! What was the range of weight on those hawgs?

New Lake Thunderbird Fishing Records

Lake Thunderbird Oklahoma bass fishing records
Two new lake record fish were caught recently at Lake Thunderbird, one largemouth bass weighing in at eight pounds, and the other a three-pound white bass.

Randall Farley of Norman Oklahoma, caught a largemouth bass on June 13 while crappie fishing. It measured 23.5 inches in length, 17 inches in girth and weighed 8 pounds.

David Belvin also from Norman Oklahoma, set the white bass record using a soft plastic lure. The bass was 18.25 inches in length, 13 inches in girth and weighed 3 pounds.

Other than Thunderbird, lakes included in the program include Arbuckle, Broken Bow, Canton, Eufaula, Fort Cobb, Grand, Kaw, Keystone, Sardis, Skiatook, Tenkiller and Texoma.

Species eligible for spots in the lake records book include blue, channel and flathead catfish and largemouth, smallmouth and spotted bass in addition to crappie, paddlefish, striped bass, striped bass hybrids, sunfish (combined) walleye/saugeye and white bass. Minimum weights are set for each species and are listed here.

Anglers who catch a potential record from a participating lake should contact designated businesses around the lake that are enrolled as lake record keepers. A listing of official lake record keepers is available here.

Lake Sooner Fishing Report

Lake Sooner Fishing Report
Fishing guide David Clark of Fish On Guide Service sends us this fishing report from Lake Sooner:

FISH ON!!!! As my good friend Tony Hughes would say “We wacked ’em pretty good”. My long time friend Steve White and I finally got to go fishing together again and we ended up doing pretty good. We started out catching some pretty small fish and kept moving around till we found some decent fish. They were really schooled up. We had to stay right on top of them to keep them going.

There was a couple of times when we couldn’t get all of our poles in the water. That would last for a while and then it would slow down as the school moved on. We ended up with somewhere around 40 fish. We just kept enough for a fish fry so we didn’t get a good count. The biggest was 4lbs but most were 3 to 4lbs. Most of the fish were caught in 28 to 32 ft. of water on downlines and the lake water temp was 86deg. Plus it was 104 in the boat, or just plain HOT. ( I saw a dog chasing a rabbit and they were both walking!!)

’08 BASS World Championship at Ft. Gibson

2008 BASS Club World Championship at Lake Fort Gibson Oklahoma
Fort Gibson Lake will host the 2008 Yamaha BASS Club World Championship October 6-11, which could be a good thing for tournament anglers considering Lake Fort Gibson took the number one spot in the most recent Oklahoma Bass Tournaments Report published by the Oklahoma Department of Wildlife Conservation.

The event will feature 38 six-angler teams that qualified for the championship event through their performance at six regional events. The six-angler teams will compete for a top prize of six Skeeter/Yamaha boat packages valued at $50,000 each, one for each winning team member.

Daily tournament launches and weigh-ins will take place at Taylor’s Ferry North. Launches will begin at 7 a.m., with the weigh-ins starting at 3 p.m. Both are free and open to the public.

The most recent Oklahoma Bass Tournaments Report (PDF)is now available for anglers looking to gain knowledge on Oklahoma bass fishing. The Wildlife Department has been gathering data on bass fishing tournaments across the state for the last 14 years, and the information collected helps in the management of bass populations.

In 2007, the average winning tournament weight was 11.89 lbs., an increase of almost one pound over 2006. The overall success rate at tournaments based on anglers or teams who bring at least one bass to the tournament weigh-in was 61 percent, down four percent over the previous year. “Though the success percentage went down in 2007 from the previous year, the success rate is still equal to the long-term average,” Gilliland said.

The average angler caught 2.3 bass per day that weighed 2.3 lbs. each, up from 1.9 bass per angler and 2.2 lbs. per fish in 2006. The largest tournament-caught bass reported in 2007 weighed 11.8 lbs. and was caught from Lake Arbuckle during a Little Dixie Bass Club tournament in March.

The Top-20 lakes were ranked according to five fishing quality measurements (percent success, average first place weight, average fish per day, average weight per fish and hours of fishing to catch a 5-pound bass).

Based on 2007 reports, Lake Fort Gibson reclaimed the top spot on the list of tournament lakes after being knocked out of the top 10 last year. Second place went to Sooner Lake, followed by Lake Wes Watkins. Grand Lake and Lake Murray tied for fourth place, followed by Lake Texoma, Lake of the Arbuckles, Lake Eufaula and Lake Keystone. Lake Eucha, Lake Tenkiller Ferry and Lake Thunderbird tied for ninth place, with McGee Creek Lake coming in tenth. Lakes were ranked on the Top 20 list if a minimum of nine reports were received.

According to Gilliland, information from lakes with fewer reports may not convey their actual fishing quality. Lake Konawa, for example, isn’t on the list because we didn’t get enough reports,” Gilliland said, “but it’s obviously a great bass lake.” See the rest of the Top 20 list as well as other tournament results in the 14-page report (PDF).
