Lake Elmer Thomas Fishing Report

Lake Elmer Thomas fishing report with Denese Freemen, WBT Co-Angler Last Sunday, I had the opportunity to go fishing on Lake Elmer Thomas with WBT Co-Angler Denese Freeman (who just won a Skeeter boat this April at Lake Lewisville Texas).

Under the watch of Mount Scott & Wichita Mountains, Denese and I headed out on her boat at the crack of dawn. Without a breeze blowing or a cloud in the sky, we had the perfect elements for a great day. The bass were jumping all around us, so we started out with top water buzzbaits but to no avail. We switched over to spinners, but again, no luck.

We then switched over to wacky-rigged Maniac Salt Sticks, 4″ Cinnamon Crawfish color and started hammering them. We caught so many bass, we lost count. Denese took me to her best good luck spot and I promptly landed this 4lber (click picture to enlarge).

If you haven’t fished Lake Elmer Thomas, do yourself a favor and go. Although small, the water is crystal clear and the mountains and wildlife are breathtaking. If you take your boat, please note that the lake is a “no wake” lake.

Lake Tom Steed Fishing Report

Lake Tom Steed fishing report, fishing at the Great Plains State Park Oklahoma Last Saturday, I had the opportunity to go fishing with my friend, future pro, and now Lake Tom Steed fishing guide Mike Diehl on his home lake.

We launched at sunrise at the Great Plains State Park boat ramp with the sun coming up over the Wichita Mountains on a cool, crisp beautiful day. There were a number of fishermen on the lake, some staying at the park, some driving in from Texas and around Oklahoma.

Earlier in the week, I received a new buzzbait (soon to be released to the market) which Mike was very excited about trying. I also wanted him to test drive some Hookhider Rods I brought along too. (BTW – No BS – my catch rate has skyrocketed on Hookhider Rods.)

Mike motored us over to one of his favorite top water spots and immediately hooked up on a nice bass. I have a great picture of it, but cannot post it until the new buzzbait is formally released by the manufacturer.

We also fished with Bitin’ Titan Spinnerbaits, which Mike added a white and red tip worm trailer to, and he caught another nice bass (pictured, click to enlarge). We also had luck with some nice hybrids on a chartruese and black Lead Babies Slabs Ghost Minnow, silver and blue Bill Lewis Rattle Traps and Mr. Wally’s chartreuse and white crankbaits.

If you haven’t been to Lake Tom Steed, I highly recommend it. There are the mountains, the (very nice) state park, hiking, camping, facilities, tackle shop, scenic overlooks, biking, heritage trails, swim beach and more.

Lake Altus Lugert Fishing Report

Lake Altus Lugert Oklahoma Fishing Guides Fishing ReportLast Friday, I had the opportunity to go fishing with my friend (and future pro) Mike Diehl at Lake Altus Lugert and with Lake Altus fishing guide Jim Bevers and his dad (bottom picture – click pictures to enlarge).

It was an absolutely beautiful day, with the sun rising over the Wichita Mountains and nothing but blue skies and light winds. We launched from the Hick’s Mountain boat ramp on the southeast end of the lake and met up with Jim, who was already on a honey hole. He recommended bottom-bouncing with slabs, so Mike tied on a chartreuse and black Lead Babies Ghost Minnow Slab and I tied on a light blue and white Hawg Hustler Slab from Klassic Lures.

We immediately started catching fish and lots of them; hybrids, catfish, bass and even a drum. We caught so many, we stopped counting. The fish at Lake Altus Lugert really like those slabs! Later in the morning, we trolled the northern part of the lake and I hooked into a nice walleye; 20.75 inches & 2.5 lbs.

If you haven’t been to Lake Altus Lugert, I highly recommend a trip. Not only is there great fishing, but there’s the beautiful mountains, Quartz Mountain Resort, Nature Park, Nature Center, Cedar Valley Hiking Trail, rock climbing, golf, beaches, swimming, ATV, sand dunes and more. In November, there’s trout fishing in the river below the dam.

SnapTail sponsors National Collegiate Bass Fishing Championship Team The National Collegiate Bass Fishing Champion was held at Lake Lewisville last weekend. After heavy competition all week, the final five teams went after the trophy on Saturday; 4 teams from Texas, including the ’07 Champs from Texas A&M, and 1 from Arkansas.

SnapTail Lures of Tulsa, Oklahoma (who sponsors this site) is also a sponsor the University of Arkansas team of Kazuki Kitajima and Bodie Drake who, it was announced, consistently brought in heavy bags all week and their efforts paid off.

Last year’s champs weighed in first and held off the next two challengers. Next came University of Arkansas who claimed first place by nearly 2 pounds over Texas A&M with a total of 17.37 lbs. Texas Tech, who claimed big bass of the day, tried to knock out Arkansas, but couldn’t do it.

During the trophy presentation, Kazuki wiped away a few tears and who can blame him. It was announced to the crowd that his parents had flown in from Japan to watch him compete. A proud moment for the Kitajima family which drew an loud round of applause from the crowd.

Congratulations to Kazuki, Bodie, University of Arkansas, and SnapTail Lures.

More Lake Records Set!

Oklahoma Record Fish
Anglers are still adding to the Oklahoma Department of Wildlife Conservation Lake Record Fish program’s record books this year, most recently with the landing of a 22.3-lb. striped bass at Lake Kaw September 10th and a 43.2-lb. flathead catfish at Lake Eufaula on August 20th.

The striped bass was caught by Luke Cobb of Ponca City, Oklahoma in the tailwaters below the dam. The fish measured 37.25 inches in length and had a 21.75-inch girth.

The Lake Eufaula record flathead was caught by Mickey L. Stallings of Oklahoma City, from the back of a houseboat at the No. 9 Marina. The fish went 42.75 inches in length and had a 26.5-inch girth.

The Lake Record Fish Program started February 1st to recognize the biggest fish from certain reservoirs and the anglers who catch them. Currently there are 13 major lakes are included in the pilot program; Arbuckle, Broken Bow, Canton, Eufaula, Fort Cobb, Grand, Kaw, Keystone, Sardis, Skiatook, Tenkiller, Texoma and Thunderbird.

Species eligible for spots in the lake records book include blue, channel and flathead catfish and largemouth, smallmouth and spotted bass in addition to crappie, paddlefish, striped bass, striped bass hybrids, sunfish (combined) walleye/saugeye and white bass.

Minimum weights are set for each species are detailed on the Wildlife Department’s Web site at www.wildlifedepartment.com.

Lake Altus Fishing Report

Night bass fishing report from Lake Altus-Lugert Oklahoma.
Future Bass Pro Mike Diehl sends us this fishing report from Lake Altus-Lugert:

I decided to try fishing Lake Altus-Lugert again, but this time for some night fishing. The weather was wet, but the worst was behind us, so I headed out at 3:30 PM and scouted out some spots and fished till 12:30 AM.

The bite was slow and off and on at times, but I managed to boat 6 fish with four nice ones. The bass were caught using a black buzz bait and a scum frog. I had several great blow ups and some nice fish that shook the hook.

I’d like to thank Darrel Cook of Cooks go-to tackle storage systems, www.cookstacklesystems.com, for making such a great product. My spinners and buzz baits have never been so handy and well organized, tangle free and easy to get to. Thanks Darrel!

Skiatook Fishing Report

Lake Skiatook Oklahoma fishing report
Fishing Guide David Clark of Fish On! Guide Service sends us this report from Lake Skiatook:

What a great afternoon we had on Sept. 6th. I needed to go fish Skiatook for a couple of trips coming up, so my Brother-in-law and I went for a few hours.

We started fishing about 3 and when we quit at 6 we had caught around 25 fish, with 15 of them being nice Hybrids. The biggest was this 9lber.

We had some more in the 4 to5 lb range. It was a nice cool day with cloud cover. We did mange to catch a few on top when the top water action came around the boat, but most were caught on downlines in 25ft to 31ft of water. The water temperature was 77 degrees.
