Paddlefish just short of a new record

Monster paddlefish is just shy of setting a new state record in Oklahoma. The best of the year’s paddlefishing may be coming to a close in Oklahoma, but not before Steven McBride of Yukon reeled in a massive 114-pounder May 12 from below Kaw Dam near Ponca City.

“This was a great catch,” said Larry Green, game warden stationed in Osage Co. for the Oklahoma Department of Wildlife Conservation.

“We are entering the time of year that offers some of the very best fishing for black bass, striper, catfish and others, but McBride’s catch shows that getting out there and paddlefishing is still paying off for some anglers.”

McBride’s paddlefish fell slightly short of the state record, a 121-pound fish caught by Shane McCleary out of the Kaw tailwaters in 2003. However, McBride’s fish measured 54 inches in length from the front of the eye to the fork of the tail, about a half-inch longer than McCleary’s state record.

Coming shy of the record didn’t seem to faze McBride. Though he’s only been paddlefishing a few times, he loves to “feel the power” of a paddlefish on the line. “It’s addictive once you hook one,” McBride said.

When McBride first snagged the fish, he thought it was a small one because the monster initially swam toward him. But eventually it turned and gave McBride and his 40 lb. test line a half-hour fight. McBride’s dad steered the boat to shore, where the fishing line linking McBride to his trophy snapped in two. McBride scrambled into the water in time to grip his broken line and was able to bring the fish the rest of the way in by hand without a rod and reel. The fish is being mounted by a taxidermist.

“This is an exciting story – one of those you tell your friends and family for years to come,” Green said.

One of Oklahoma’s largest fish, paddlefish feed on tiny, microscopic insects and are caught during the spring by snagging with a surf rod, heavy test line and large barbless hooks. In Oklahoma, they are found in several river systems and lakes.

“We’ve yet to see the best fishing of the year,” Green said. “When it comes to many of Oklahoma’s most popular and readily available fish, the angling is just now starting to get hot.”

Lake Lawtonka Report

Lake Lawtonka crappie
OKFG subscriber Chris Roebuck sent in this report from Lake Lawtonka:

The weekend crappie are biting on minnows in about 4 to 6 feet of water. Dragging a jig or rooster tail can also spark the bigger blue gills, which are feeding too. Bass are real slow. Dragging plastics at almost a dead stop will get nibbles and bites. Channel cats are biting on stink bait.

Editor’s Note: Thanks for the report & picture Chris. Looks like you had a tasty fish fry that night!

Tom Steed Crappie Report

Lake Tom Steed crappie caught by Mike Diehl
Aspiring Pro Mike Diehl sends us this report from Lake Tom Steed:

Well, the bite is starting to happen at Tom Steed Lake. Catfish, hybrid, small bass and crappie can all be caught with a little patience and good timing. The cats and hybrid can be found on the flats while the bass and crappie are hiding near the banks and surrounding brush and cover.
I have fished for crappie before in Illinois but for some reason I have had a hard time figuring out Oklahoma-style crappie fishing. So today after landing six bass and one crappie on my Fishbelly Helix Buzz bait, it hit me! These crappie can be just as big and aggressive as bass, so let’s go crappie fishing bassin’ style and try what I know best. I rigged up a small spinner on my bass pole and gave it a shot with good results for a somewhat slow day.
Here are the nicest two of five I brought home – 2.0lb and 1lb 12oz.

Editor’s Note: Thanks for the report Mike! Nice to know that the Helix Buzz works well on crappie too. I bet those slabs tasted great!!

Great Salt Plains & Canton Reports

Great Salt Plains carp are biting
March winner Mark sent us this report from Great Salt Plains Lake & Canton Lake:

I was finally able to get out and try out some of the new lures. I used the Lead Babies Slabs that I won; one was a blue & silver Pee Wee and one was a yellow & black long minnow. I had some success with the Pee Wee at Canton Lake. The white bass are still biting and I caught several in just a couple of hours.

I also got a chance to go to Great Salt Plains Lake, which had a lot of water running through it, hopefully the fishing will get better. To my surprise I caught several carp on both of my Lead Babies Slabs! Even though they are not really desired fish, they were sure fun to catch.

Anyways, thanks a lot, I love this web site and all the lake updates!!

Editor’s Note: Thanks for the report Mark and congratulations on winning our box full of goodies! We knew the lures would work — just didn’t expect it on carp!!

Lake Texoma Smallmouth on the Bite!

Lake Texoma fishing report from GW Chisholm of Trails Guide Service says the smallmouth bass bite is on!
Fishing guide GW Chisholm of Trails Guide Service sends us this smallmouth bass report from Lake Texoma:

Yesterday was a good smallmouth bass day! These are a few of the over twenty smallies that we caught along with several black bass.

Most of them looked as if they are post spawn so this bite won’t last but a couple of weeks longer.

Now is the time for a trophy, if that is what you are after!
