Big Lake Sooner Blue Catfish

Lake Sooner Oklahoma Fishing Guide Big Blue Catfish

Oklahoma Fishing Guide David Clark sent in this report from Lake Sooner:

What a day of fishing and catching. We started out catching Hybrids(wipers) just about as fast as we could keep the poles in the water. Then this BIG BLUE came along. Didn’t quite have the equipment for him but we made it.

After about 3 or 4 big runs and about 30 minutes we got him in the boat. Thought we was going to have to pull anchor, but ended up not having to. I was using 10lb test so I was trying to be real careful.

My scales wouldn’t go that high so I called a good friend and he put a calculator to it. The fish measured 47″ length by 32″ girth. When muptiplyed out that comes to 61 lbs. After we got the Blue in the boat the Hybrid bite slowed down (I figured the high fiven, dancing and hollering might of spooked them) so we moved to another spot and continued on there.

When we left after about 5 hours we figured we caught between 45 to 50 Hybrids. All of the Hybrids were caught on downlines on live shad, most were on the small side. The Blue was caught on live shad on a free line with a 1/4 oz weight, he was on the big side :). The water temp. in the discharge was 54degs.

Editor’s Note: Wow! What a great fish David!! Guess you are going to buy a new scale that goes up to 100?!? If you would like to go fishing with David Clark, contact him at 918-724-6786 or visit his site at www.FishOnOK.com.

Hybrid are hitting

I took a chance at getting pretty wet today but it payed off. Fishing actually shut off early in the morning but manage a decent catch. I started by boating three decent bass for Tom Steed and then tried for some Hybrid. I have caught several hybrid lately in the 5lb – 8lb range and what a great fish for it. These are coming from 20 – 30 ‘ down and nothing could be better for a terrific fight.

Holiday Hybrids w/ Lead Babies Slabs on Lake Tom Steed

Oklahoma fishing report, Lake Tom Steed, Hybrids on Lead Babies Slabs.

Well I told myself I was going to stay off Lake Tom Steed during the busy Holiday weekend, but I just couldn’t do it.

I tried a little trolling this morning but the fish were small and the bite was a little slow so I found the big ones on my fish finder and started the slabbing.

Caught these nice hybrids on Lead Babies Slabs in 30 feet of water and what a blast I had bringing them to the surface.

I really need to get a net that doesn’t snag the hooks because I spent most of my time just trying to free my slabs from the net after the catch.

One thing that you need to make sure you do is follow the lure down with your line just slightly tensioned so you don’t miss the taps on the fall but when you feel it set the hook hard and Fish ON!!!!

Lead Babies Slab’s wear them out on Tom Steed

Sand bass fishing with Lead Babies Slabs at Lake Tom Steed Oklahoma

Wow, what a day I had Tuesday on Lake Tom Steed fishing for sand bass. All I can say is “Fish On and on and on.!!!!!!” I had started out looking for large mouth but they were not to be found so I decided to try the sand bass and what a blast I had. I simply could not keep up with the fish using the Lead Babies Slabs.

I was using both the 2oz Long minnows and the Rattlin Mary fishing the Long Minnows in deep water where the glow in the dark model simply slayed them in the stained conditions and the Rattlin Mary excelled in the shallows where there wasn’t much room for the bait to fall. The Rattlin Mary works great both deep and shallow but when your fishing in only two to three feet the rattles on this lure brings them running. At times they were hitting this lure so hard it was actually flying out of the water on the up stroke and I couldn’t stop laughing.

Fifty fish later I simply couldn’t fish any more I was just flat out tired. The sand bass were great and ready to fight, and fight they did!

If your looking for a great fight and a great slab to do it with pick up some Lead Babies Slabs from the folks at Alluring Lures and Tackle in Cordell or contact Doug at Oklahomafishingguides.com you wont be disappointed. The three I was using are pictured above. Good fishing, all sand bass were caught and released.

Cloudy day Saugeye on Tom Steed

Lake Tom Steed Oklahoma fishing report - the saugeye are biting!

I started the day out bass fishing at Lake Tom Steed but the bite was slow. Through out the week I had seen an angler or two pull a Saugeye from the lake so I decided to do some trolling. About an hour and half later I had several hybrids and three nice Saugeye with the largest at 24″.

I decided to share the fun and give my fishing partner Keith (The Surf Rod) Aldridge a call. Keith met me at the ramp and we were off for more. After only 2 hours Keith had manged to pull several more hybrid and three more Saugeye as I guided him around the lake and would have had five total for him self if two of them had not spit the hook right at the boat.

What a great day to fish with the clouds and cooler weather.

Saugeye on a cloudy day

Friday was cloudy and cool considering the heat we have had had lately so I set out to do some fishing. The bass bite was slow and I had seen a few people through out the week catch a Saugeye or two so I decided to do some trolling. As soon as I had begun trolling I started slamming hybrids and several times I had two rods going at once.

After letting my 6th hybrid go the Saugeye began to strike, and just an hour later I had caught three Saugeye with the nicest one at 24″. I decided I would share the experience with my new fishing partner Keith (The surf rod) Aldridge and gave him a call. No longer than 15 minutes into guiding Keith around the lake he set the hook on the first of Three that he caught in the short time frame he was in the boat not to mention the two other fish that spit the hook right at the boat. http://i69.photobucket.com/albums/i61/madman_07/saugeye2009013.jpg?t=1249145837

Lake Texoma Fishing Report

Lake Texoma Fishing Report

On Sunday, a couple of buddies and I went fishing on Lake Texoma on the Oklahoma side.

The wind was blowing in pretty hard during the lunch hour as the “cold” front was coming through. It made fishing a bit difficult and handling the boat was rough at times.

Most of our normal tactics were not working during the heat of the day, so I decided to take us over to a shoal off a point where I’ve always caught all kinds of fish.

The wind had moved around and was coming out of the east, so we would motor near the shore on one deep side and let the wind push us across the shoal the other side which was also deep.

The fish finder was marking all kinds of fish in both the deep water and across the shoal, but nothing was working until we switched over to slabs. Then the action started!

My buddy Rob caught this nice striper on a slab he bought at Alberta Creek Marina. I caught a HUGE drum, 20 – 25 lbs on a Lead Babies Slab. Rob has the catch on his iPhone as a video, so once he sends it, I link it up to this post.

One more note: remember to put on major sunscreen this 4th of July. We used SPF 30 and it might as well have been SPF 0. We were crispy critters on Monday! Guess it’s time to bump up to SPF 45…
