Lake Tenkiller Fishing Report

Lake Tenkiller Oklahoma fishing report bass
Last weekend, I had the opportunity to go fishing on Lake Tenkiller with fishing guide Rocky Thomas, Jr. It was my birthday on Saturday, so a couple of my cousins from Kansas City drove down so we could have a fun weekend. Although it was windy on Saturday, and VERY windy on Sunday, Rocky got us on fish all day long!

On Saturday morning, my cousin Colby caught a nice bass on a Bitin’ Titan Spinnerbait from the dock of Burnt Cabin Marina and Resort where were staying. When Rocky took us over to his first favorite cove, I immediately caught a 4.5lb largemouth bass on my very first cast and the day only got better from there! (Click on pictures to view large images.)

By lunch I caught 2 more largemouth bass between 4lb and 5lb and on my last cast before lunch, I hooked up with a 5lb smallmouth bass. It was awesome! And once again, I nailed all these fish on my favorite setup; a
Hookhider road with a wacky rigged Maniac 4″ Cinnamon Crawfish Salt Stick. Needless to say, after lunch, everybody else rigged up with the same wacky rig and we all continued to nail fish all day long. I even caught a 5lb black drum on the rig!

On Sunday, the wind was brutal, and the wacky rig was less effective. The wind created too much slack in the line to feel the subtle hits, so we all switched over to War Eagle Spinnerbaits and the trusty Bitin’ Titan Spinnerbaits. We caught just about every kind of fish the lake has; largemouth bass, smallmouth bass, kentucky bass, white bass, and bluegill. Just an absolutely awesome birthday fishing trip.

Saturday night, Colby’s dad Pete, whipped up an awesome birthday fish fry; fresh kentucky bass, BBQ beans, cole slaw, pan-fried potatoes and chocolate chip cookies for dessert. Thank you Pete and Colby for driving down from KC to fish with me on my birthday! And a huge thank you to Lake Tenkiler fishing guide Rocky Thomas for getting us on fish all day long, 2 days in a row, even with the major wind on Sunday. As I’ve always said, the weather only bothers the fisherman, but the fish are still hungry.

If you would like to go fishing with Rocky on Lake Tenkiller or other lakes he fishes in the area, such as Grand Lake, Lake Greenleaf, Lake Hudson, Lake Robert S. Kerr, Lake Spavinaw, Lake Eucha, Lake Oologah, or the Illinois River, he can be reached at 918-837-0490 or visit his website at www.ThomasGuideService.com.

Lake Tom Steed Fishing Report

Lake Tom Steed fishing report, fishing at the Great Plains State Park Oklahoma Last Saturday, I had the opportunity to go fishing with my friend, future pro, and now Lake Tom Steed fishing guide Mike Diehl on his home lake.

We launched at sunrise at the Great Plains State Park boat ramp with the sun coming up over the Wichita Mountains on a cool, crisp beautiful day. There were a number of fishermen on the lake, some staying at the park, some driving in from Texas and around Oklahoma.

Earlier in the week, I received a new buzzbait (soon to be released to the market) which Mike was very excited about trying. I also wanted him to test drive some Hookhider Rods I brought along too. (BTW – No BS – my catch rate has skyrocketed on Hookhider Rods.)

Mike motored us over to one of his favorite top water spots and immediately hooked up on a nice bass. I have a great picture of it, but cannot post it until the new buzzbait is formally released by the manufacturer.

We also fished with Bitin’ Titan Spinnerbaits, which Mike added a white and red tip worm trailer to, and he caught another nice bass (pictured, click to enlarge). We also had luck with some nice hybrids on a chartruese and black Lead Babies Slabs Ghost Minnow, silver and blue Bill Lewis Rattle Traps and Mr. Wally’s chartreuse and white crankbaits.

If you haven’t been to Lake Tom Steed, I highly recommend it. There are the mountains, the (very nice) state park, hiking, camping, facilities, tackle shop, scenic overlooks, biking, heritage trails, swim beach and more.

Thanks Mike for taking me fishing on a lake you clearly know very, very well. If you would like to go fishing with Mike, call him at 580-639-2065 or email him at futurepromike@gmail.com.

5 Casts, 5 Bass

I went bass fishing yesterday in East Texas (near Commerce) with a buddy and took my Hookhider rods, Bitin’ Titan spinner baits and River Bottom Lures Possum Craws and had a great day.

When we got there, the wind was very mild, the sky was deep blue without a cloud in the sky, the water was clear and the air was cool. I rigged up the Bitin’ Titan 3/8 oz. white skirt, Colorado blade with gold tape spinner bait on a Hookhider 5’ 6’ Light Spin rod and caught 5 bass on my first 5 casts, each one bigger than the last one!

Then, about an hour later, the wind started roaring up to 30 mph, so I switched over to a 1/2 oz Mojo slip shot with the River Bottom Lures Possum Green Pumpkin Red Craw and a Gamakatsu red hook, 3/0 Offset Shank EWG, and hammered another dozen bass. The Hookhider rods were also key to my catch rate. They are so incredibly sensitive – you can feel every teeny, tiny bump from the fish. I only missed a couple of strikes all day.

My buddy was using his rods and reels and some generic spinners, rooster tails, and other widely available products and wasn’t catching anything. After complaining that he had never been skunked on his lakes before, I gave him some of my extra rods and lures and he finally caught 2 bass towards the end of the day. He is definitely sold on the products and wants to order some rods and lures and get rid of the stuff he currently has. He even liked my Readi-Lure tackle box and the way it kept everything organized and untangled.

My buddy also took some pictures of me with some bass on my cell phone and I wish I could share them with you, but the darn phone won’t download the pics without a stupid subscription fee – d**n Sprint.
