Tulsa’s Terminator Acquired by Rapala

The sale of American companies to overseas firms touches the fishing industry.

Finnish-based Rapala Lures is acquiring Tulsa, Oklahoma-based Terminator Lures and will move production to Mexico and close the Tulsa offices and warehouse space.

Read the entire Tulsa World News story at TulsaWorld.com.

Editor’s Note: I’ve always been a fan of the Terminator product line, but in light of the Oklahoma job eliminations, I may find myself hard-pressed to support the brand in the future. If it’s cheaper to make them in Mexico, are they going to lower the price?

Lake Vanderwork Crappie Hot

Aspiring pro Mike Diehl sends us this report from his recent trip to Lake Vanderwork on 1/8/07:

Lake Vanderwork is hot on crappie. They tore them up yesterday. I only caught a few today but from what I am hearing when they are biting they are biting like mad.

Editor’s Note: Thanks for the report Mike. Looks like the crappie are heating up all over the state.

Tenkiller Winter Smallies

Lake Tenkiller smallmouth bass caught by Darris Smith.
We received this Smallie report and picture from regular contributor Darris at Lake Tenkiller:

The weather turned nasty through the weekend & shut the bite down. I had to search for clear water and out of the wind. The water temp was right at the 49 to 51 marks before and after the front, but fishing was tough.

On Monday the 1st I did find some smallmouth bass. I couldn’t send you the picture of the best one – he took my jig and left me before I got to touch him (re-tie, re-tie, re-tie when fishing rocks). I did snap one smallmouth worth a picture.

Editor’s Note: Thanks for the report Darris. Looks like it was an absolutely gorgeous day to be on the lake. Nice smallie!

Tenkiller Winter Hawgs

Lake Tenkiller winter largemouth bass caught by Darris Smith.
We received this Hawg report and picture from regular contributor Darris at Lake Tenkiller:

The bite was still on the last week of December. The largemouth bite was hot on the 27th. I was catching them on jigs up shallow (about 4 to 6 feet deep). I caught several that day and lost one shallow smallmouth.

I snapped a picture of the biggest. I had to lead him way out away from the bank to take the picture. The wind was blowing so strong that it would have pushed me on the bank! But if you could stand the chill and fight the wind, it was well worth it.

Editor’s Note: Well worth it? I would say so Darris! What a nice bass. Just proves that big bass bite year round. Thanks for the report and picture. How big was he? Looks like 6 to 7 lbs…

Cool New Tackle Box

Readi-Lure, the most innovative tackle box on the market today.

While attending the Texas Fishing, Hunting & Outdoors show this weekend in Arlington, Texas, I met Alicia Wills, co-inventor of the coolest tackle box on the market – Readi-Lure, by Tackle Tech.

Pictured is the new and improved Readi-Lure Fishing Tackle Box has 86 compartments and comes in your choice of three distinct colors.

What I particularly liked was the way it handled spinner baits. You can store them individually, instead of in a pile. No more fused together skirts!

Check out the entire line at www.Readi-Lure.com.

Oklahoma Made Lures

Lead Babies Slabs and Alluring Reel-Feel Shad are made in Oklahoma.
While attending the Texas Fishing, Hunting & Outdoors show this weekend in Arlington, Texas, I met Connie Slaughterback, owner of Lead Babies Slabs and Alluring Lures & Tackle companies. Her companies are based in Cordell, Oklahoma and produce some very interesting hard and soft baits.

Pictured on the top is the Rattling Mary, the only rattling lead slab on the market and is made by Lead Babies Slabs. On the bottom is the Reel-Feel Shad, a soft plastic lure that looks like a real minnow and is made by Alluring Lures & Tackle Company.

For those of you who like to support your local businesses, I highly recommend that you support Connie and give her lures a try. There are some very good testimonials on the success other anglers have had with the baits on her website. Check out the entire line of slab lures at www.LeadBabiesSlabs.com. Connie says there’s a new site coming soon for Alluring’s Reel-Feel lures, but you can call 580-832-5446 for more information and a brochure.
