Lead Babies Slab’s wear them out on Tom Steed

Sand bass fishing with Lead Babies Slabs at Lake Tom Steed Oklahoma

Wow, what a day I had Tuesday on Lake Tom Steed fishing for sand bass. All I can say is “Fish On and on and on.!!!!!!” I had started out looking for large mouth but they were not to be found so I decided to try the sand bass and what a blast I had. I simply could not keep up with the fish using the Lead Babies Slabs.

I was using both the 2oz Long minnows and the Rattlin Mary fishing the Long Minnows in deep water where the glow in the dark model simply slayed them in the stained conditions and the Rattlin Mary excelled in the shallows where there wasn’t much room for the bait to fall. The Rattlin Mary works great both deep and shallow but when your fishing in only two to three feet the rattles on this lure brings them running. At times they were hitting this lure so hard it was actually flying out of the water on the up stroke and I couldn’t stop laughing.

Fifty fish later I simply couldn’t fish any more I was just flat out tired. The sand bass were great and ready to fight, and fight they did!

If your looking for a great fight and a great slab to do it with pick up some Lead Babies Slabs from the folks at Alluring Lures and Tackle in Cordell or contact Doug at Oklahomafishingguides.com you wont be disappointed. The three I was using are pictured above. Good fishing, all sand bass were caught and released.

Cloudy day Saugeye on Tom Steed

Lake Tom Steed Oklahoma fishing report - the saugeye are biting!

I started the day out bass fishing at Lake Tom Steed but the bite was slow. Through out the week I had seen an angler or two pull a Saugeye from the lake so I decided to do some trolling. About an hour and half later I had several hybrids and three nice Saugeye with the largest at 24″.

I decided to share the fun and give my fishing partner Keith (The Surf Rod) Aldridge a call. Keith met me at the ramp and we were off for more. After only 2 hours Keith had manged to pull several more hybrid and three more Saugeye as I guided him around the lake and would have had five total for him self if two of them had not spit the hook right at the boat.

What a great day to fish with the clouds and cooler weather.

Lake Tom Steed Fishing Report

Lake Tom Steed Oklahoma fishing report crappieFuture pro Mike Diehl sends us this report from Lake Tom Steed:

Well I finally managed to heal up enough to get out on the water again and it sure felt good. The fishing is picking up again at Lake Tom Steed and should improve quickly with good, steady warm weather. Catfish are biting on worms, bass are slow but will improve quickly, saugeye are post spawn and slow, but the big word today is crappie.

Crappie fishermen are hitting the creek and main lake hard and good numbers are being caught. I got tired of the slow bass bite so I decided to show the crappie fishermen what keepers looked like with two nice ones caught one after the other over 1.5lbs.

Editor’s Note: Thanks for the pictures and report Mike! I’ll bet they were mighty tasty too. Glad to hear you are finally healed up and back on the water. We’ve missed hearing from you!!

14,000 Extra Rainbow Trout

Each year, the Lower Mountain Fork River (LMFR) is stocked bi-weekly with rainbow trout, but the southeast Oklahoma fishery will receive six “bonus” stockings this spring that will provide more than 14,000 additional
fish.

The first two supplemental trout stockings took place Feb. 5 and Feb. 12, and the remaining four are scheduled for Feb 26, March 12 & 26 and April 9. Each stocking includes over 2,400 fish that are nearly a foot in length.

“These trout are going to be placed in remote areas of the stream that aren’t usually stocked,” said Jay Barfield, streams management technician for the Oklahoma Department of Wildlife Conservation. “And at 11 inches they will be a bit larger than usual and ready to put up a fun challenge. Angling should be great in these areas during the coming weeks.”

The additional rainbow trout are being provided to the Wildlife Department by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service to help offset the impacts caused by Broken Bow Dam on the LMFR. The trout will be obtained from the Greers Ferry National Fish Hatchery in Arkansas and then released into the LMFR trout fishery between the State Park Dam and the US Route 70 bridge.

The LMFR is one of eight Oklahoma trout fisheries and one of two year-round trout fishing hotspots in the state. Other trout hotspots include; Altus Lugert/Quartz Mountain, Lake Watonga, Lake Carl Etling, Blue River, Illinois River, Robbers Cave, Dolese Youth Park Pond (OKC), Lake Pawhuska, and Clayton Lake State Park.

To view the regular, bi-weekly trout stocking schedule and specific regulations for all the state’s trout waters, including the LMFR, log on to www.wildlifedepartment.com. The Web site also includes tips on how to catch trout as well as a wealth of information about the state’s streams management program, which works to provide healthy streams and better stream fishing in Oklahoma.

This November has been one of the best ones that I can remember in recent years.
As of right now the fishing is awsome with numbers of good quality largemouth and spotted bass being caught on my trips. We averaged over 40 fish a trip during Thanksgiving week. (Click on pictures to enlarge.)

And now that December is here, the fishing will continue to be really good through Christmas. I am already booking for next spring and have many dates already booked, so if anyone is interested in a spring trip, please contact me ASAP to ensure getting the dates you want.

Lake Sooner Fishing Report

Lake Sooner Oklahoma fishing report from fishing guide David Clark of Fish On! Guide Service Fishing guide David Clark of Fish On! Guide Service sends us this fishing report from Lake Sooner:

FISH ON!!!! Went out on Saturday and had a good, slow, steady day. We had trouble finding the fish, but when we found them, it was pretty good action.

We found them in a place I had never fished for them before. They were in 56ft of water on the bottom. We caught one and I thought hmm. I anchored up and it stayed just slow and steady the rest of the afternoon. I was surprised the bait was living good at that depth. We were fishing 2 to 4 cranks off of the bottom.

We ended up with 35 Hybrids. Almost all were in the 3lb range with a couple 4’s. Water temperature on the lake is still 50 degress and 64 degrees in the discharge.

Editor’s Note: Thanks for the report and picture Dave. Looks like a great trip was had by all! If you would like to go fishing with Dave, call him at 918-724-6786 or visit his website at www.FishOnOK.com.

Tom Steed Fishing Report

Lake Tom Steed Oklahoma Fishing Report from Fishing Guide Mike DiehlFishing guide Mike Diehl sends us this report from Lake Tom Steed:

I haven’t been able to fish for weeks, so for Thanksgiving, I spent most of the day on the water. It was one of those days where nothing went right and then everything just goes crazy. The fishing was slow, the fishing line was constantly tangled, my live well pump quit and the other one was leaking.

Then the excitement began and the fish were hitting hard for about an hour. My first and largest caught on a Hookhider Rod and Bomber Lure and the rest caught and lost on a new Foster buzzbait (that I actually named) called the Grim reaper. I landed four bass and the largest was just shy of three pounds.

Then IT happened. I set the hook and brought to the boat the biggest bass I have ever seen in person. This bucket mouth was huge and I mean every bit of ten pounds or better and just as I reached for his lip he was gone with one shake of his huge body.

The rest of the day was spent crying on the front deck of the boat. It was the good, the bad, and the ugly all rolled up into one trip.

Editor’s Note: Thanks for the report and pictures Mike. Looks like a great day on the lake to me! Of course, we all have that story….it was this big….really….huge…but it got away. If you would like to going fishing with Mike, give him a call at 580-639-2065.

Lower Illinois River Trout Stockings Resume

Trout stockings that had been temporarily suspended in the Lower Illinois River due to warm water temperatures will resume November 19th.

According to Jim Burroughs, east central region fisheries supervisor for the Oklahoma Department of Wildlife, it was heavy spring rains and a period of extreme heating that combined to create the unusually warm water in Lake Tenkiller. Wildlife Department officials had hoped to resume stockings by the end of October, but water temperatures remained at critical levels for trout, temporarily preventing further stocking at that time.

“This has been a very unusual year,” Burroughs said. “Temperatures needed to be 65 degrees or lower in the tailrace during power generation before regular stockings could resume. Temperatures have now reached this threshold level.”

Anglers won’t miss out on any of the fish that did not get stocked during the suspension, however, as officials with the Department say the same number of fish will eventually be stocked through additional or larger stockings.

The Lower Illinois River is one of the only two year-round trout fisheries in the state and is managed by the Wildlife Department. The other is the Lower Mountain Fork River below Lake Broken Bow in Beaver’s Bend State Park.

Lake Altus/Tom Steed B & B

Deer Ridge Bed and Breakfast in Hobart Oklahoma. Near lakes Altus-Lugert and Tom Steed. Serving the best steak you have ever had! Several weeks ago, I had the opportunity to travel to Southwest Oklahoma and go fishing with fishing guide Mike Diehl at Lake Tom Steed and fishing guide Jim Bevers at Lake Altus-Lugert. While there I stayed at the greatest little B & B this fisherman could ask for – Deer Ridge Bed & Breakfast in a great little town, Hobart, Oklahoma.

Dubbed “A Western Bed & Breakfast”, Deer Ridge is way more than that – by far. Tastefully and artfully decorated by the owners themselves, every detail has been thoughtfully handled. I stayed in the room named “Covered Wagon” which had the most comfortable bed I think I’ve ever slept on. The magazines sprinkled throughout the property are the same ones I subscribe to, helping me feel right at home.

As an added surprise, they convert the first floor of the property into a restaurant on Friday nights and call it “Friday Night Steak Night” featuring the “best steaks you have ever had” – quote from the owner. Well, since my wife and I have had “Friday Night Steak Night” at our home for the last 20 years, plus the claim of the best steaks ever, and being a boy originally from the KC stockyards area, who now lives and eats steaks in Dallas, I had to give it a try.

I started with the cold boiled shrimp cocktail which was so fresh and delicious. The shrimp were huge and the homemade cocktail sauce had the perfect amount of tangy spice to it. Then I had very fresh and tasty salad made with baby spinach, toasted walnuts, feta cheese and dried cranberries topped with a house-made balsamic vinegarette. Then the waitress brought out my perfectly cooked ribeye and sides. The steak was huge, cut like butter, and was, without ANY doubt, the best steak I have ever had – in my life! I asked the owner where she got the beef and she said locally. Next time I’m up there, I’m bringing a cooler to bring some of those steaks home with me.

And if that weren’t enough, they have a dessert called the Chocolate Turtle. Since I’m a chocolate hound, I had to try it, even though I was already stuffed from dinner. It was a warm, slightly gooey, perfect handmade brownie with thick streaks of firm fudge and rich carmel, topped with a creamy scoop of vanilla ice cream and lightly drizzled with more carmel and dark chocolate. I thought I had died and gone to heaven! It was absolutely, without ANY doubt, the best chocolate dessert I have ever had!

By this time, I was so stuffed and satisfied, I had to go out on the front porch and rock in the rocking chair for awhile. Too bad I didn’t bring a cigar and some cognac!

If you find yourself in Southwest Oklahoma or want to get away for a nice weekend, I highly, highly recommend Deer Ridge Bed and Breakfast. You may be thinking, boy, he really liked the place maybe a bit too much – does he really know what he is talking about? Just so you know, I was in the hospitality business for 24 years, including hotels and food & beverage. I know a thing or two about excellent hospitality and Deer Ridge has got it going on.
